China–Laos Railway to Yunnan: A Border-Crossing Guide

How to book the international train, prepare for Mohan and Boten inspections, and build a realistic Laos–Xishuangbanna–Kunming journey.

11 min read

Yes, foreign travelers can use the China–Laos Railway to enter Yunnan, but the international train is not simply a domestic rail journey with a border in the middle. Confirm your legal basis for entering China, buy the cross-border ticket through the official channel for your departure country, collect the required paper ticket, and allow for immigration and customs at Boten and Mohan.

This guide was verified on October 23, 2026. Timetables, fares, ticket inventory, visa policies and station procedures can change. Recheck China Railway 12306, LCR Ticket and the National Immigration Administration before departure.

Who this route suits

The railway works best when Laos and southern Yunnan form one continuous trip: for example, Luang Prabang or Vientiane to Xishuangbanna, followed by Pu'er or Kunming. It is less suitable when a traveler has not confirmed entry eligibility, needs a guaranteed same-day flight connection, or is relying on a ticket screenshot rather than an issued cross-border ticket.

Recent traffic shows that this is no longer an experimental route. Reporting published on October 12, 2026 said the international service had carried about 950,000 cross-border passengers from more than 120 countries and regions. That scale does not remove the need for careful planning; it explains why popular dates can sell quickly.

First confirm how you may enter China

A train ticket is transport, not immigration permission. Before booking, confirm whether you will use:

  • a valid Chinese visa;
  • a mutual or unilateral visa exemption that applies to your passport, purpose and length of stay;
  • the 240-hour visa-free transit policy; or
  • another narrowly defined policy, such as an eligible organized tour arrangement.

Mohan railway port is on China's current list of eligible entry ports for 240-hour visa-free transit. That policy still requires an eligible nationality, valid international travel document and a confirmed onward journey to a third country or region. Laos–China–Laos is generally not the required third-country pattern. Entry remains subject to border inspection.

Do not assume that a policy for an organized ASEAN tour group applies to an independent traveler. If your eligibility is not clear, use the National Immigration Administration's official guidance or the 12367 service before buying non-refundable onward travel.

Buy the correct cross-border ticket

China Railway's current international-passenger notice separates sales channels by origin:

  • for journeys starting in China, use China Railway 12306 or a designated counter at Kunming, Kunming South, Yuxi, Pu'er, Xishuangbanna or Mohan;
  • for journeys starting in Laos, use LCR Ticket or a designated counter at Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, Muang Xay or Boten.

Cross-border tickets require a valid passport. The official notice states a 15-day advance sales window and requires online purchasers to exchange the booking for a paper ticket at a designated station before travel. Carry the original passport used for the booking. The passenger, passport and ticket details must match.

Check the passenger name, passport number, date, train, departure station and destination immediately. A domestic ticket to Boten or Mohan does not replace an international ticket across the border. Likewise, a search result, pending request or payment screenshot is not proof that a seat has been issued.

Understand the border process

The international service stops for exit and entry formalities at Boten on the Lao side and Mohan on the Chinese side. Follow staff instructions and take all hand luggage with you when told to leave the train for inspection.

Plan for:

  • railway security and paper-ticket checks before boarding;
  • Lao exit or entry formalities at Boten;
  • Chinese immigration and customs at Mohan;
  • baggage screening and possible questions about your itinerary;
  • time-zone awareness: China is one hour ahead of Laos.

An official June 2026 report said Kunming South and Vientiane were linked by four international passenger trains a day, with the fastest journey taking about 9 hours 36 minutes and Mohan railway-port processing around 50 minutes. Treat those figures as dated context, not a promise for your train. Check the actual timetable and arrive as instructed by the operator.

Keep your first-night hotel name, address and phone number in Chinese, an offline copy of the onward itinerary, and evidence relevant to your visa or exemption. Foreign arrivals may also need to complete China's arrival-card process under the current rules.

Pack for the railway rules, not for an airport assumption

China Railway's cross-border notice sets a 20-kilogram carry-on allowance for most adult passengers and a maximum combined external dimension of 130 centimetres per item. It also says the international train does not offer checked-baggage service. Special limits apply to children and diplomats.

Restrictions are not identical to an airline's. Check the latest prohibited and restricted items before packing food, alcohol, aerosols, batteries, tools, plants, animal products or large sports equipment. Customs rules are separate from railway size and weight rules. Declare items when required; do not assume that something permitted on the train may automatically cross an international border.

Build a route with recovery time

Do not place a non-refundable flight immediately after the international train. Border questions, queues, timetable changes or a late arrival can break a tight connection.

A practical sequence is:

1. Luang Prabang or Vientiane to Xishuangbanna: make Jinghong your first Chinese base and keep the arrival evening light.
2. Xishuangbanna to Pu'er: add tea, landscape or local culture only after the border day.
3. Pu'er or Xishuangbanna to Kunming: use a separate domestic train day or a generous same-day buffer.

If you are continuing directly to Kunming, still keep the first night flexible. If you plan to leave the railway in Xishuangbanna, confirm transport from the station to your accommodation and do not confuse Xishuangbanna Railway Station with a central Jinghong address.

A final six-point check

Before leaving for the station, confirm all six:

  • my passport and entry basis are valid for this exact route;
  • my cross-border seat is issued through 12306, LCR Ticket or a designated counter;
  • I know where and when to collect the paper ticket;
  • the ticket details match my passport exactly;
  • my baggage fits both railway and border rules;
  • my first connection after arrival has enough recovery time.

If any answer is uncertain, solve it before adding hotels, tours or domestic flights around the border day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy a Laos-to-China ticket on 12306?

The current official notice directs China-origin cross-border sales to 12306 and Laos-origin sales to LCR Ticket or designated Lao stations. Follow the channel for the country where the cross-border journey starts.

Do I need a paper ticket?

Yes. The current international-passenger rules say online cross-border bookings must be exchanged for a paper ticket at a designated station before travel.

Can I use 240-hour visa-free transit at Mohan railway port?

Mohan railway port is listed, but only eligible travelers with the required documents and a confirmed onward journey to a third country or region may apply. A ticket alone does not establish eligibility.

Should I stay in Xishuangbanna after crossing?

It is often the most forgiving first stop because it avoids stacking a long border journey with another distant transfer. The right choice depends on your train, arrival time and confirmed accommodation.

Can I check a suitcase on the international train?

The current 12306 notice says the international service does not handle checked baggage. Most adult passengers have a 20-kilogram carry-on allowance; verify current limits before departure.

How early should I arrive?

Follow the operator and departure station's current instruction. Allow materially more time than for a routine domestic train because you need a paper ticket, passport checks and international processing.
