Lost Your Passport in Yunnan?

A calm, step-by-step guide for foreign travelers—from police report to onward travel.

9 min read

If your passport is lost or stolen in Yunnan, report it promptly to the local public security authorities and obtain a passport-loss certificate. Then contact your country's embassy or consulate in China for a replacement passport or emergency travel document. After receiving the new document, ask the local exit-and-entry administration what visa, stay or residence formalities you must complete before continuing or leaving China. Do not assume that an embassy document alone resolves your Chinese immigration record.

This guide was verified on October 18, 2026. Procedures, required materials and consular services vary by location, nationality and immigration status. Call China's Immigration Service Hotline at 12367 for current exit-entry guidance and follow the instructions of the police, your embassy or consulate, and the local exit-and-entry administration.

First: confirm whether it is lost or stolen

Retrace only safe, recent steps. Ask the hotel, transport operator or venue to check lost property. If the passport disappeared at Kunming Changshui International Airport, the airport announced a 24-hour lost-property number, 0871-96566, in September 2026. A venue search can recover the document, but it does not replace a police report once you reasonably believe the passport is lost or stolen.

If a bag or phone was also taken, secure bank cards, mobile wallets, email and your phone account. Do not publish a full passport image or passport number in a public post.

The official sequence

1. Report the loss locally.

The National Immigration Administration says a foreign national whose passport is lost should promptly approach the local public security authority for a passport-loss certificate. Local handling may begin at a police station and continue at an exit-and-entry administration office. Ask the officer exactly where to go next and keep every receipt or case reference.

Bring whatever helps establish identity and circumstances:

  • a protected copy or photo of the passport identity page;
  • visa, entry-stamp or arrival-card copies, if available;
  • hotel registration or current accommodation details;
  • booking records showing when and where the passport was last used;
  • another photo ID;
  • passport photos, if requested locally.

These are preparation suggestions, not a universal document list. The receiving authority decides what is required.

2. Contact your own embassy or consulate in China.

China cannot issue a replacement foreign passport. Your country's mission decides whether it can issue a new passport, emergency passport or other travel document, what evidence it needs, where you must appear and how long processing may take.

Use the mission's official website or an official government directory. Be cautious with paid intermediaries and search advertisements that imitate consular services.

3. Return to the local exit-and-entry administration if required.

A new passport or emergency document may not contain the Chinese visa, entry stamp or stay/residence record attached to the lost passport. National rules provide for visa or permit procedures after loss, but the correct step depends on whether you entered with a visa, under visa-free rules, or hold a stay or residence permit.

Call 12367 or visit the local exit-and-entry administration. Take the police loss certificate, replacement travel document, embassy letter if issued, accommodation registration and other materials requested. Do not wait until the airport or land border to discover that a Chinese immigration formality remains incomplete.

If you entered visa-free

A 2025 border-inspection clarification says a visa-free visitor who changes to a new passport, emergency passport or travel document after loss may be allowed to depart once identity, entry record and supporting loss or consular documents are verified, provided there is no overstay or other violation. That is not a promise of automatic boarding or same-day clearance.

Ask 12367 or the exit-and-entry administration to confirm the documents for your exact case before heading to the port of departure.

Can you still take a train?

China Railway's current identity-document rules list a passport-loss certificate issued by public security among documents that foreign travelers may use at station ticket windows or for onboard ticket handling. They also list a foreigner's visa-document application receipt and certain temporary international travel documents, subject to the stated visa or stay-document requirements.

Practical limitations remain:

  • online identity verification may still be tied to the lost passport number;
  • an existing ticket may contain the old document details;
  • station staff may need to inspect the original loss certificate;
  • an embassy emergency document may need an accompanying Chinese visa or stay document.

Go to a staffed station counter early with all original documents. Do not rely on a screenshot or assume the app will update automatically. For normal ticket and identity preparation, see the Yunnan train ticket guide.

Hotels and accommodation registration

Tell your current hotel immediately and retain its accommodation-registration information. When you receive a replacement passport, local guidance may require the accommodation record to be updated. If you stay somewhere other than a hotel, check the current registration procedure with the host and public security authority.

Do not move repeatedly between cities while the case is unresolved unless the responsible authorities confirm that you can. The police report, consular appointment and immigration follow-up may all be location-dependent.

Flights, border crossings and fixed bookings

Contact the airline only after you know what document your embassy will issue. A carrier's boarding checks and China's exit formalities are separate decisions. Name, nationality and document-number changes may require ticket reissue or manual review.

For cross-border rail, road or river travel from Yunnan, do not treat a domestic train rule as permission to leave China or enter another country. The destination country's entry rules and the carrier's rules also apply.

Ask hotels and tour operators for written change or cancellation terms. Travel insurance may cover some document-replacement or delay costs, but coverage and evidence requirements depend on the policy.

Prepare before a trip

Keep the following separately from the original passport:

  • an encrypted or access-controlled copy of the identity page and current visa;
  • the passport number, issue date and expiry date;
  • your embassy or consulate's official contact page;
  • insurer and card-issuer contacts;
  • accommodation addresses in Chinese;
  • a small reserve of money and a second payment method.

Share copies only with legitimate authorities or service providers that need them. A copy helps prove details; it is not a travel document.

Connectivity matters during recovery. Keep essential numbers offline and review the Yunnan mobile internet guide before departure. The foreign-traveler payment guide explains why a backup card and some RMB cash still matter.

Frequently asked questions

What is the first thing I should do after losing my passport in Yunnan?

Report the loss promptly to the local public security authorities and obtain instructions for a passport-loss certificate. If theft is suspected or you are in immediate danger, call police at 110.

Should I contact my embassy or the Chinese immigration authority first?

Start the local police reporting process, then contact your embassy or consulate for a replacement travel document. You will usually also need guidance from the local exit-and-entry administration about your Chinese visa or stay record.

Can China issue me a new foreign passport?

No. Your own country decides whether to issue a replacement passport or emergency travel document. Chinese authorities handle the loss report and any necessary Chinese immigration formalities.

Can I travel by train with a passport-loss certificate?

China Railway lists a public-security passport-loss certificate among accepted documents for foreign passengers at staffed ticket windows or onboard handling. Arrive early and ask staff to check your ticket and identity record; online functions may not update automatically.

Can I leave China with only an emergency passport?

Do not assume so. Your entry record, visa-free status, visa or stay permit may need verification or replacement. Confirm the exact requirements with 12367 and the local exit-and-entry administration before departure.

Who can answer current immigration questions in English?

China's Immigration Service Hotline 12367 provides 24-hour Chinese and English service. Additional language support and official digital channels are also available, but an urgent case should be handled directly with the responsible local authority.
